Tri Color Tortellini

Cheese-filled pasta cooks in minutes for weeknight dinners, your go-to comfort food solution.

What it is

Tortellini are small, ring-shaped pasta parcels that originated in Northern Italy. These are filled with cheese and colored naturally with spinach (green), tomato (red), and plain egg pasta (yellow) to create an attractive tri-color mix.

How to cook

Bring a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil. Add tortellini and cook for 8-10 minutes until they float to the surface and are tender. Drain and toss immediately with sauce, butter, or olive oil.

Flavor and texture

The pasta has a tender, slightly chewy texture with a mild, savory cheese filling. The different colors don't change the flavor significantly - they all taste like classic cheese tortellini.

Best uses

Perfect for quick weeknight dinners with marinara or alfredo sauce, excellent in pasta salads, wonderful in soups, or simply tossed with olive oil and parmesan. Great for meal prep since they reheat well.

Storage & freshness

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry pantry.

Durations are for best quality. Safe to consume longer if no spoilage signs present.

Signs of spoilage
musty odorvisible moldinsect activityoff colorrancid smell from filling

Filled pasta has shorter shelf life than plain pasta due to cheese and other fillings that can spoil.

Cooking tip

Don't overcook - tortellini are done when they float to the surface and feel tender when tested with a fork. Overcooked tortellini can burst and lose their filling.

Interesting note

Legend says tortellini were inspired by Venus's navel - an Italian innkeeper was so struck by the goddess's beauty that he created this pasta shape to honor her perfect form.

Cooking at Baker City elevation

At Baker City elevation (~3,400 ft), tortellini need 10–11 minutes instead of 9. They float to the surface when done, then need another 30–60 seconds to fully cook the filling.
