Nutritional Yeast

Adds instant cheesy flavor to vegan sauces and pasta dishes without dairy or cooking time.

What it is

Nutritional yeast is a deactivated form of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast that's been specially grown and processed into golden flakes. Unlike baker's yeast, it won't make bread rise, but it's prized for its nutty, cheese-like flavor and nutritional benefits.

Flavor and texture

It has a nutty, savory, almost cheese-like taste with umami richness. The texture is light and flaky, similar to fish food flakes, and dissolves easily when stirred into foods.

Best uses

Sprinkle on popcorn, pasta, or salads for instant flavor. Blend into vegan cheese sauces, stir into scrambled tofu, or add to soups and stews for extra depth. Great for making dairy-free 'parmesan' seasoning.

Storage & freshness

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry pantry away from light.

Durations are for best quality. Safe to consume longer if no spoilage signs present.

B-vitamins are light and heat sensitive, so proper storage maintains nutritional potency.

Cooking tip

Store in a cool, dry place and add nutritional yeast at the end of cooking to preserve its delicate flavor - high heat can make it taste bitter.

Interesting note

Nutritional yeast is often fortified with B12, making it one of the few plant-based sources of this essential vitamin that's typically found only in animal products.
