Popcorn White

Pops up light and fluffy for movie nights and afternoon snacking, your go-to treat.

What it is

White popcorn kernels are a special variety of corn with hard outer shells that trap moisture inside. When heated, the moisture turns to steam and causes the kernel to explode into the fluffy white popcorn we know and love.

How to cook

Heat 2-3 tablespoons of oil in a heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat. Add a few test kernels, and when they pop, add 1/3 cup of kernels. Cover and shake the pot occasionally until popping slows to 2-3 seconds between pops.

Flavor and texture

Mild, slightly nutty corn flavor with a light, airy crunch. White popcorn tends to be more tender and less hulky than yellow varieties.

Best uses

Movie night snacks, trail mix base, kettle corn, caramel corn, or seasoned with nutritional yeast, herbs, or spices for a healthy treat.

Storage & freshness

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry pantry away from light.

As purchased6-12 monthsdepends on bin turnover and storage conditions
Sealed (pantry)1-2 yearsif kept airtight in cool, dry conditions
Refrigerated2-3 yearsextends shelf life but may reduce moisture content
Frozen3-4 yearslongest storage option, maintains popping quality

Durations are for best quality. Safe to consume longer if no spoilage signs present.

Signs of spoilage
rancid smellstale odorinsect activitymoisture clumpingpoor popping quality

Keep away from heat sources as kernels can dry out and lose their ability to pop properly.

Cooking tip

Keep the pot moving with gentle shakes to prevent burning and ensure even popping - this helps every kernel reach its full fluffy potential.

Interesting note

Popcorn is actually one of the oldest snack foods, with evidence of popping dating back over 5,000 years in Peru and Mexico.

Cooking at Baker City elevation

Popcorn pops via dry heat, not boiling water — altitude has essentially no effect on pop times at Baker City (~3,400 ft). Cook as you would at sea level.
