Blackstrap Molasses
Iron-rich sweetener perfect for gingerbread and baked beans, your bold baking essential.
What it is
Blackstrap molasses is the final byproduct of sugar refining, created after sugar cane juice has been boiled three times. Unlike lighter molasses, it contains the concentrated minerals and nutrients that remain after most sugar has been extracted.
Flavor and texture
Rich, thick, and pourable with an intense, slightly bitter-sweet flavor that's more complex and less sweet than regular molasses. It has robust, almost smoky notes with hints of licorice.
Best uses
Perfect for gingerbread, baked beans, barbecue sauces, and marinades. Mix into oatmeal, yogurt, or smoothies for added minerals. Use sparingly in bread baking or as a molasses cookie ingredient.
Storage & freshness
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark pantry away from heat sources.
| As purchased | 1-2 yearsif stored properly in bulk bins |
| Sealed (pantry) | 2-3 yearsin airtight container |
| Refrigerated | 3-4 yearsextends shelf life but may thicken |
Durations are for best quality. Safe to consume longer if no spoilage signs present.
May crystallize over time but can be warmed gently to reliquefy — crystallization does not indicate spoilage.
Cooking tip
Start with small amounts - blackstrap's bold flavor can easily overpower dishes. Try mixing it half-and-half with lighter molasses or honey until you develop a taste for its intensity.
Interesting note
Blackstrap molasses was once considered a waste product of sugar production, but it actually contains more minerals like iron, calcium, and potassium than the refined sugar it helped create.
