Powdered Sugar
Dissolves instantly for silky frostings and dusting desserts, your baking staple.
What it is
Powdered sugar is regular granulated sugar that's been ground into an ultra-fine powder and mixed with a small amount of cornstarch to prevent clumping. It's also known as confectioner's sugar or icing sugar.
Flavor and texture
Sweet with a fine, powdery texture that dissolves instantly on the tongue. It has the same sweetness as granulated sugar but feels much smoother.
Best uses
Perfect for buttercream frosting, glazes for donuts and cakes, dusting over desserts, making royal icing, and in no-bake cookies where you need sugar that dissolves without heating.
Storage & freshness
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry pantry.
| As purchased | 6-12 monthsin original bulk bin conditions |
| Sealed (pantry) | 2-3 yearsif kept airtight and dry |
Durations are for best quality. Safe to consume longer if no spoilage signs present.
Absorbs moisture readily, causing clumping and hardening — use moisture-absorbing packets if stored in humid conditions.
Cooking tip
Always sift powdered sugar before using to remove any lumps and ensure your frosting or glaze stays perfectly smooth.
Interesting note
The cornstarch in powdered sugar makes up about 3% of the mixture and serves as an anti-caking agent, which is why you can't simply substitute it 1:1 for granulated sugar in recipes.
